Rachmaninov, Delius, Prokofiev & Debussy

August 6th, 3.30pm

St. Katherine's Church, Lincoln

We close this year’s Festival with a concert mixing works created out of the great Anglo-French dynamic with pieces written by composers who emigrated from Russia following the 1917 revolution.  The Sonata for 2 violins was composed in France at a time when Prokofiev believed that, “Russia had no use for music”.  Delius was the quintessential Anglo-French composer; born in England but resident in France for most of his life, his music developed a language that was unique.  The final work in the programme is Debussy’s masterpiece La Mer, written while the great French master stayed in Eastbourne overlooking the English Channel.  It is performed here in the transcription by Sally Beamish, one of the UK’s most respected composers. This work received its world premiere here in Lincolnshire during Festival 2013.
